Do you ever hear someone say that “all of the good domain names are already taken” or that “there are no longer any worthwhile domain names available to hand register”?

 

It’s not uncommon for those in the domainer community and also those who have less experience looking for domain names to become frustrated when they find domain after domain that they like already registered. But is it really true that hand registering domain names is dead?

 

Here are 3 reasons why I believe that there are will almost always be many valuable domain names available to hand register:

 

1. Lack of Development – The majority of domainers and even end users simply do not know how to get maximum value from their domain names. This means that there are dropped domains constantly entering the available to hand register category that can be quite valuable in the hands of someone who actually knows best how to monetize a domain name. Always remember that a domain name is often worth drastically different amounts in the hands of 2 different people. If you have domain development knowledge, domain monetization knowledge, and the skills to execute then you will likely be able to have success hand registering domain names that others have tried to make money with and failed.
2. Failing Businesses – Another reason for new domain names becoming available to hand register is that many businesses go out of business and just flat out forget about selling off their company domain name. Often these domain names have Page Rank, backlinks, an Alexa rank, and other potentially valuable SEO characteristics. Since the 5 year small business failure rate is around 90% in the

   then this means that many of the businesses that fail each year will have websites and domain names that they will let lapse.
3. Keyword Data – Many domainers stick to the tested strategy of buying only 5 letter or less domain names and hope that they can resell the domains for a big profit to a company that is desperate for a short domain name matching their company name’s acronym. This can be a good strategy but a strategy that I prefer is to really dig deep into keyword research and find keyword domain names available to register. While ultra competitive one word keyword domain names will most likely already be registered there are still a lot of valuable 2, 3, and 4 letter long tail keyword domains available for hand registering. Resources like the Google Adwords Keyword Tool and the Google Search Based Keyword Tool are great places to start your keyword research.
